Friend. Follow. Text. to launch in Toronto

If you’re in Toronto, I’ll be reading Wednesday, October 23 at Playful Grounds on College as part of the launch of the anthology Friend. Follow. Text #storiesFromLivingOnline.

The anthology is out with the boutique Winnipeg publisher Enfield & Wizenty and features stories involving digital or social media. It’s edited by Shawn Syms and features the work of Canadian and international writers like Steven Heighton, Jessica Westhead, Zoe Whittall, Heather Birrell and others.

I’m thrilled that my story “5’9, 135, 6c, br bl” will appear in the anthology. This story was originally published in the inaugural issue of Plenitude, and prior to that, was a finalist for the Matrix Litpop Fiction Award and was also adapted for stage reading by Workshop West Theatre as part of the Exposure Festival in Edmonton. It’s also currently being adapted into a short film.

The piece tells the story of a young Vancouver man’s Internet hook-up with a powerful and closeted older guy, and the tragic end to his evening’s adventures.

Recently I joined Shawn and a few of the other writers in the book for a roundtable discussion about, among other things, the role of social and digital media in our writing lives. You can find that conversation over at Necessary Fiction.

The anthology is now available at bookstores or online. Find out more on its Facebook page. Hope to see some of you at the launch!
