“Esperanza” in Joyland
I’ve always been a big fan of the work over at Joyland magazine. Joyland is an online site that showcases short fiction selected by regional editors across North America, and they’ve published some great authors recently, including Giller Prize winner Lynn Coady and Journey Prize winner Naben Ruthnum.
Late last year I heard from editor Kathryn Mockler that my new story “Esperanza” would be included in Joyland. It was great to work with Kathryn on the piece. It’s now live (and free) over in the Vancouver section of the site.
“Esperanza” is the first story I wrote entirely during my time in Spain last winter and spring, when I was putting together many of the stories in my (now nearly complete) first manuscript, so it feels fitting that it’s my first piece of work published in 2014.
