The Berlin Project
Twenty-five years ago, The Berlin Wall came down. To mark the anniversary, Descant magazine has curated The Berlin Project, a packed special issue “exploring the streets and squares of Berlin through the eyes of over twenty-five notable writers and thinkers”.
Included in the special issue is my story “When We Die“, one of several I wrote while living in Berlin in 2013. The story explores, among other things, the treatment of gay men in Germany during and after the Nazi years. It’s also an exploration of contemporary Berlin seen from the perspective of a young Canadian artist.
I’m grateful to Karen Mulhallen, guest editor Katie Franklin, and everyone at Descant for their work, in particular the careful eye of Jack Hostrawser, production editor. The issue is packed with great writing by writers like George Bowering, Mark Anthony Jarman, George Elliott Clarke, and others.
